2019 10 06 - BWS Headmaster's Update

School News
HMC Conference – in Greenwich earlier this week provided the usual food for thought (see my additional blog entry at https://lnkd.in/dBaqt7i), but in addition there were some interesting and potentially useful exhibitors there too. Discussion among the Heads was dominated by the recent broadsides launched from the Labour Party, which is a shame since it generated much more heat than light. Of some interest towards the end was a ‘question time’ held with a panel of university representatives. It emerged that the ‘magical’ 50% university progression rate had been reached this year , but that also there was a higher drop-out rate in the UK than for many EU countries.

Sixth Form Recruitment – visits to schools thus far have included Harrow Way (Andover), King’s, Westgate, Henry Beaufort (all Winchester), Stonehenge (Amesbury), Pewsey, Lavington and Mountbatten (Romsey); in addition we will be represented at the forthcoming Andover Schools’ Careers Fair which will be visited by students from 6 schools.

Lecture – Peter Wothers (St Catherine’s, Cambridge) entertained all of years 10 and 11 on Wednesday, talking about the Periodic Table. Most entertaining I am told!
